In Forest. Pigments, 2025
Monika Jarecka (b. 1975, Poznan, DE) develops site-specific projects that respond to local conditions. Her works are created in cycles, following instructions that are negotiated anew for each project and act as a framework for her practice. Observation, notation, and an ongoing search for environmentally conscious ways of working are central to her approach. She explores the relationship between reality and construction, and the choice and application of color are guided by the events of the day. In her work, a canvas or a place in nature becomes a surface for projecting these experiences.
For this project, Monika researches pigments that can be used safely in the forest without harming the habitat of countless living beings. The vibrant spectrum of colors that defines her painting practice in the urban studio is reduced to just three shades when working in the natural environment. Using turmeric, beet powder, and cornflower, Jarecka experiments in the forest with ephemeral pours on the leafy ground. She reflects on the possibility that these natural pigments might have beneficial effects on the local ecosystem, particularly for animals, insects, and fungi.
