Giving back / Krämerwald, 2025 –
Kirsten Palz (*1971 Copenhagen, DK) is a conceptual visual artist. Her practice is rooted in research, language, and activism. Her artistic work addresses present global challenges such as climate change, species extinction, usage of synthetic chemical compounds, destructive consumption patterns, and the accelerated degradation of Earth's ecosystems. When she began her archival work, Chronicle of Extinction, in 2021, Kirsten Palz was unprepared for the overwhelming volume of data that would inundate her practice, nor for the profound sense of loss that accompanied this knowledge. Examining the scale of species extinction, animals, plants, and fungi, led her to focus on the underlying structures of human behavior causing these losses.
The initiative Giving Back / Krämerwald (2025 –) marks Palz’s first land art project within a broader series dedicated to restoring ecologies of beauty and survival. The site of this inaugural work is a section of the Krämerwald forest located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Berlin that has been historically impacted by war and human exploitation. In a clearing within a monoculture pine forest, 210 trees have been planted. Species bearing wild fruits were chosen to provide food for deer, birds, insects, fungi, and microorganisms, contributing to the enhancement of biodiversity.
